Chapter 9

Bianca

Ifeel like a total moron! How could I be so easily convinced by that arrogant bosshole that he’d ever do anything I requested of him? I’ve literally wasted two years of my life for nothing.

My phone rings and adds to my irritation. I rip it out of my pocket and wind my arm back with every intention of offing the thing on the pavement. The caller ID halts my movement and brings a rush of warmth into my soul – Mum is calling.

“Bianca Lily Summers, you have a lot of explaining to do, young lady. How could you keep that gorgeous boyfriend of yours a secret from your family?!” Mum’s voice is loud, but I can hear the anticipation and excitement she’s trying to hide. If only I could relate to how she feels.

The frenzy of today’s activities, coupled with Aiden’s dismissiveness, saps me of any reserve of energy I normally have. I’m so exhausted I can’t even think of colorful words to refer to Aiden with.

“I haven’t been trying to hide anything, Mum; it’s nothing serious.”

Mum gasps dramatically and pretends to faint on the other side of the phone. “I demand you turn it into something serious. Are you blind, honey? He is yummy!”

I make a gagging noise as Mum says this and resist the urge to roll my eyes. “Ew, Mum, please! Give it a rest already!”

I can hear her wagging her index finger at me over the phone. “Uh-uh, not until you bring him around to meet us. Even Dad thinks he’s ho—“

“Oh my god, stop! What is wrong with you people?” In disgust, I dangle my phone between my thumb and index finger as far away from my face as possible. It doesn’t help, and I can still hear her.

“Bianca, are you listening to me? Bring him over this weekend, or better yet, to your brother’s wedding as your plus one!”

I pretend the signal is cutting out and hang up before I hear more of her demands.

I stepped out into the freezing night hoping to forget I ever met the grumphole. Now, thanks to Mum’s fangirling, Aiden is the only thing on my mind again.

I walk briskly along the dimly lit streets, the bitter cold gnawing at my skin, matching Aiden’s grip on my thoughts. Mum’s relentless excitement about meeting him only intensifies my internal struggle to suppress any feelings that threaten to bubble to the surface.

As I turn a corner, a gust of wind tugs at my coat, causing me to shiver involuntarily.

Thoughts of Aiden infiltrate my mind like whispers in the wind, impossible to ignore. His piercing brown eyes taunt me, their intensity etching into the deepest corners of my memory.

I try to focus on other things, anything that will divert my attention away from him.

But his smirking face is an unwelcome and persistent intruder. His lips curl up in amusement whenever he sees me, mocking my attempts at avoidance. No matter how hard I try, his smirks are seared into my memory, teasing me every waking moment.
